Primary sources, not summaries. The published research behind our approach to AI, strategy, and operations for small business.
The evidence base
Every recommendation Principia makes is grounded in published research and verifiable data. The sources below are cited throughout our site and form the analytical foundation of our approach. We share them here because a client who reads the primary research will understand exactly why we work the way we do.
AI implementation
The central premise of Principia's approach is that AI fails when it is prescribed before the problem is understood. These studies quantify the gap between adoption and actual results, and demonstrate that workflow redesign is the determining factor in whether AI produces a return.
Analysis of 300 public AI deployments found that 95% of AI pilots delivered no measurable P&L impact. The study identifies the root cause as surface-level adoption without real workflow change.
Survey of nearly 2,000 participants across 105 countries. Found that 88% of organizations have adopted AI, but only 39% report measurable EBIT impact. Just 6% qualify as high performers. The single most important factor: whether the organization redesigned its workflows around the tools.
Tracked payments to AI services by 4.6 million small businesses. Found that 17.7% had adopted AI services by end of 2025, up from 5.2% in 2023. Newer businesses are adopting 13 times faster than their predecessors did six years ago.
Found that 82% of small business employers have invested in AI tools, the median business runs five AI tools, and 62% plan to increase AI investment in the next year. Owners report saving a median of 5 hours per week.
Sales & pipeline
Oldroyd, McElheran, and Elkington analyzed 2,241 companies and over 100,000 leads. Firms responding within five minutes were 100 times more likely to make contact and 21 times more likely to qualify the lead than those that waited thirty minutes. The study that established response time as the single largest factor in lead conversion.
Sales professionals using AI and automation tools save an estimated two hours per day on manual tasks including data entry, follow-up scheduling, and lead qualification. The report makes the case that consistent cadence, not individual effort, is what prevents deals from going cold.
Analysis of more than one million sales opportunities across 1,418 organizations. Teams using AI deal execution tools achieved 26 to 35% higher win rates. Organizations reported average revenue growth of 19% in 2024, up from 11% the previous year.
Finance & forecasting
Predicts that 90% of finance functions will deploy at least one AI-enabled technology solution by 2026, with less than 10% seeing headcount reductions. The impact is in visibility and speed, not labor replacement.
Predicts that embedded AI in cloud ERP applications will drive a 30% faster financial close by 2028. For small businesses, this means the data the accountant produces becomes useful to the operator in time to act on it.
CFOs who implement strategic AI deployment will add 10 margin points of growth by 2029. The qualifier is strategic. The study distinguishes between organizations that deploy AI with a clear financial thesis and those that adopt tools without one.
Industry intelligence
Survey of over 1,000 contractors found that the average HVAC company misses 27% of its inbound calls. Industry data suggests this translates to $45,000 to $120,000 in lost revenue annually for a typical field-service business.
Contractors using AI-assisted estimating reported 19% fewer cost overruns and 22% fewer change orders attributable to estimating errors. 61% of contractors are now using AI or plan to increase investment, up from 44% the prior year.
Generative AI adoption among small law firms and solo practitioners nearly doubled in a single year, from 27% to 53%. Firms with a clear AI strategy are almost four times more likely to see tangible returns on investment. The report underscores that implementation without strategy accelerates cost without improving outcomes.
